Carnforth is a market town and civil parish located in the City of Lancaster, Lancashire and is situated 5 miles north of Morecambe and Lancaster.
The name may have come from its old function as a ford of the River Keer on which it is sited. It is thought that over time the name “Keer-ford” may have morphed into the name to which it is now known – Carnforth.
The history of the town revolves around the railway and ironworks. Due to the vast amount of limestone deposits found locally, Morecambe was the ideal town for an ironworks as limestone is a key component used in the smelting process. Iron production continued in the town until 1929 when it finally closed. The site is now home to an industrial estate made up of several businesses.
Interestingly and famously, in 1945 Carnforth railway station was used as a location for the film Brief Encounter. Following the films’ success, fans of the film were instrumental in the reconstruction of the refreshment room at Carnforth Station which is now named the “Brief Encounter Refreshment Room and Bistro and Bar”. Visitors can also have their photo taken under the famous clock which was featured so prominently in the film.
There is plenty to do in and around Carnforth from browsing the many independent shops to hiking, climbing and abseiling at Warton Crag. Also nearby is the canal network that links Carnforth to nearby villages and beautiful countryside for those who wish to explore and enjoy the great outdoors.
