How do I know if my TV aerial needs replacing?

18/2/2022

Unless there is an obvious glaring fault with the TV aerial it would be hard to know for sure if the TV aerial needed replacing. Testing equipment is always used by aerial installers for just that reason. Simply by looking at an aerial doesn’t always tell a great deal. Hence, high-quality signal meters are always used by engineers.

However, there are signs that you can look for that will help to indicate whether or not a fault is occurring with the aerial system as a whole.

I’m getting No Signal on the television

So, you have just sat down after a long day and switched on the television, and you see it. The dreaded ‘No Signal’ sign bouncing around the TV screen. This is one of the biggest indicators that there maybe a problem with the aerial. I say maybe, because there are multiple reasons for a no signal sign, some of which are easy to resolve.

Such as, the coax cable is not plugged into either the TV or the socket. The TV input is set wrong, which can be fixed by pressing the input or source button and selection TV. Check these first before going any further. If these are ok, then if there is an amplifier, check it is still switched on.

Of course, it could mean that the aerial itself is faulty, but it would take an engineer with testing equipment to find out for sure. Go here for more info.

The television Picture Fractures on occasion

Again, this could indicate that there is a problem with the aerial, but it could also be something else. Problems such as connection issues, a faulty amplifier or booster, damaged or degraded coaxial cable can all lead to a problem with the signal.

I’m Missing TV Channels

This is due to either there being an issue with the signal being received or the TV itself can on occasion have a fault. Doing the obvious checks is the first place to start. If there is nothing obvious, then it would take an engineer to come and test where the fault lies. Quite often it can be a faulty aerial.

There is water coming from the coax cable

This is a pretty definite reason to change the aerial. If water is coming in via the coax cable, then the likelihood is that the aerial itself has lost its waterproofing. Although this isn’t conclusive as there can be a few other factors as to why there would be water ingress. However, the majority of the fault lies with the aerial.

There is Visible damage to the antenna

If the aerial has got damaged and it can be visibly seen, then it would be prudent to get it replaced. The damage is only set to get worse with strong winds and rain. It is advisable to replace it sooner, rather than waiting for parts to break off and fall onto people or property below.

It isn’t Not Receiving HD Channels

Certain aerials can struggle to get all the signals from the transmitter. Sometimes the frequency that suffers is the one carrying the HD channels. It really does depend on which transmitter being received. However, if this is the case getting a high-quality TV aerial to replace the existing one is probably the best way to go in resolving this issue.

In Conclusion
There are multiple reasons why a TV is not getting a good signal or not receiving any signal at all and showing no picture. From the actual aerial being faulty, through to connections or even a fault with the television itself. If after checking the connections there is nothing obvious, the only real option would be calling out an aerial engineer to find the exact fault and fix it.
