The borough's history dates back to the 12th century, and Saxons settled here in the sixth century. The Saxons, led by the king of Wessex, consolidated victories over the Vikings, and built a castle to defend their land from attack. The castle is a good example of a Saxon defensible site, and there are similar riverside brush in nearby towns such as Silverdale and Cuerdale.
The town has a rich history dating back to prehistoric times. It was known as "Penverdent" in the Domesday Book, and it was occupied by King Edward during the Norman conquest. The area was held by Warine Bussel's barony during the 12th century. Roger of Poitou, who later built Lancaster Castle in nearby Lancaster, also built a castle at Penwortham.
